The head of Google's Jigsaw company, Jared Cohen, at a meeting of the UN Security Council on June 21(2022), spoke about how, Russia is waging war against Ukraine in the digital sphere.
He outlined five lines of attack:
- Cyber attacks on critical infrastructure, including DDoS attacks and operations using zero-day vulnerabilities (that is, those that were not previously known). According to Cohen, these attacks continue and make it difficult for Ukrainians to access critical resources - websites of government agencies, NGOs, banks, and so on.
- Attempts to blacken Ukrainians by means of deception. We are talking about the distribution of deepfakes about the use of drugs by the President of Ukraine, Vladimir Zelensky, or about attempts to worsen the attitude towards Ukrainian refugees by disseminating false data about crimes allegedly committed by them.
- Attempts to control the narrative about the war, including through fake "fact checkers" who "debunk" claims supposedly made by Ukrainians. This is done, in particular, to expose Ukrainians as liars and to sway public opinion in favor of Russia, Cohen believes.
- Using false information to provoke violence and justify it. As an example, Cohen cited the use by Russian propaganda of the term "Nazis" in relation to Ukrainians, which probably led to the dehumanization of the
